TOPIC: Reflections of the Australian Women’s Army Service. The first AWAS were posted solely to headquarters and base installations but later served with intelligence, signals, ciphers,

electrical and mechanical training units, heavy convoy work, anti-aircraft and coastal artillery, gunsights and searchlights. They were cooks, clerks, orderlies, canteen workers, provosts,

butchers, instrument repairers, transport drivers and ambulance drivers. Some were attached to chemical warfare experimental units, some were administrators, some fixed marine engines.

Some were interpreters, some entertainers. Some repaired bomb blasted tanks from the middle east, some were experts in First Aid. Some worked in waterfront workshops, some with the

Australian Mechanical Engineers, some with the broadcasting unit, some with the photographic unit. The AWAS included 3618 members who served with the Royal Australian Artillery,

manning the fixed defence of Australia. There were 3600 in the Australian Corps of Signals. From the appointment of the Controller, Colonel Sybil Irving, on September 29 1941 until the

cessation of hostilities in August 1945, 24028 girls and women enlisted as volunteers in the Australian Women’s Army Service., NOTES: Green ep
